Muhammad Aurangzeb Ahmad has spent two decades building AI systems at clinical scale and investigating what those systems encode. As Director of AI at a healthcare AI startup, he has led the development and deployment of AI systems across more than five major health systems, translating research into clinical tools that affect real patients. He is a Resident Fellow at Harborview Medical Center (UW Medicine), Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of Washington Bothell, and Adjunct Faculty at the Responsible AI Systems and Experiences (RAISE) initiative at UW. His research operates at three frontiers: clinical AI and algorithmic fairness, AI and death, grief, and memory, and AI governance. He led the team that created fairMLHealth, an open-source toolkit for measuring algorithmic fairness in clinical AI. His graduate research at the University of Minnesota, spanning the Department of Computer Science and the Center for Cognitive Science, led with collaborator Nishith Pathak to a university spin-out company. He writes a monthly column for 3 Quarks Daily and has been featured in the New York Times, Wired, PBS, Ars Technica, and FOX 13 Seattle.
